Don't memorise answers. For each question, read what the interviewer is looking for, then practise answering out loud in your own words with a real example. The notes describe strong answers and common red flags — they are for your prep, not a script.
Legal Advisory
1 questionHow do you advise the business in a way that manages legal risk without blocking it?
AdvancedWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong answers frame advice around risk and practical options, enabling the business to make informed decisions, not just saying no. Being a pure blocker is a red flag for in-house counsel.
Contract Drafting
1 questionHow do you approach reviewing and negotiating a high-value commercial contract?
AdvancedWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for identifying and prioritising key risks (liability, indemnity, IP, termination), and negotiating pragmatically. Fighting every minor point equally, or missing a major risk, are red flags.
Corporate Governance
1 questionHow do you keep the company compliant with its corporate governance obligations?
AdvancedWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong candidates understand board processes, statutory duties, and record-keeping, and build practical compliance into operations. Treating governance as pure formality is a red flag.
Risk Assessment
2 questionsHow do you assess and communicate legal risk to executives making a fast decision?
AdvancedWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for quantifying likelihood and impact, giving a clear risk-based recommendation, and being decisive. Vague 'it depends' with no guidance is a red flag.
The business wants to do something legally risky to hit a deadline. How do you handle it?
AdvancedWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for clearly explaining the risk, offering safer alternatives, and holding the ethical and legal line while being a partner. Either caving to pressure or a flat unhelpful no are red flags.
Compliance
1 questionHow do you build a compliance culture rather than just policies on paper?
IntermediateWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong answers make compliance practical, train people, and embed it in workflows. Policies nobody follows are a red flag.
Stakeholder Management
1 questionHow do you manage outside counsel to control cost and quality?
IntermediateWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for clear scoping, budgets, and oversight while leveraging their expertise. Rubber-stamping external bills or duplicating their work are red flags.
Due Diligence
1 questionHow do you handle due diligence for an acquisition or major deal?
AdvancedWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong candidates identify material legal risks, prioritise findings, and translate them into deal terms or decisions. Drowning the deal in immaterial issues, or missing a key one, are red flags.
Company Law
1 questionHow do you apply Company Law when advising the board on a corporate action?
AdvancedWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for accurate application of statutory requirements, directors' duties, and process. Vague or incorrect statutory advice is a serious red flag.
Intellectual Property
1 questionHow do you protect the company's intellectual property?
IntermediateWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong answers cover ownership in contracts, registrations where appropriate, and confidentiality. Ignoring IP terms in agreements is a red flag.
Employment Law
1 questionHow do you handle an employment law issue such as a difficult termination?
IntermediateWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong candidates ensure fair, compliant process, document properly, and manage risk with empathy. Ignoring process or compliance is a serious red flag.
Negotiation
1 questionHow do you decide when a dispute should be litigated, settled, or arbitrated?
AdvancedWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for weighing cost, risk, business relationship, and likely outcome, favouring commercial resolution where sensible. Litigating on principle regardless of cost is a red flag.
Attention to Detail
1 questionHow do you keep meticulous accuracy while handling a high volume of matters?
BasicWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong answers use prioritisation and checks and never let volume compromise accuracy on material terms. Sloppy work under pressure is a red flag.
Behavioural & role-general
2 questionsTell me about a time you helped the business achieve a goal while managing legal risk.
BasicWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for a business-partner mindset, a concrete solution, and a good outcome. Positioning legal purely as a gatekeeper is a red flag.
How do you handle pressure to approve something you believe crosses an ethical or legal line?
IntermediateWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong answers hold a firm ethical line and escalate appropriately, protecting the company long-term. Willingness to bend under pressure is a serious red flag.
