Don't memorise answers. For each question, read what the interviewer is looking for, then practise answering out loud in your own words with a real example. The notes describe strong answers and common red flags — they are for your prep, not a script.
Customer Onboarding
1 questionWalk me through how you onboard a new customer for long-term success.
IntermediateWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong answers define success with the customer, drive to first value fast, and set a plan and milestones. Treating onboarding as a product tour with no outcomes is a red flag.
Churn Analysis
1 questionA key account's usage has quietly dropped. What do you do?
AdvancedWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for proactively reaching out, diagnosing the root cause, and building a re-engagement plan before renewal. Noticing only at renewal time is a red flag.
Renewal Management
1 questionHow do you approach a renewal conversation months before it is due?
IntermediateWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong candidates continuously demonstrate value, track health, and surface risks early, so renewal is not a surprise. Scrambling at the last minute is a red flag.
Relationship Building
1 questionHow do you build a genuine relationship with a customer rather than being seen as a vendor?
IntermediateWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for understanding their goals, being a trusted advisor, and delivering value consistently. A purely transactional or reactive stance is a red flag.
Empathy
1 questionAn angry customer threatens to churn over a bug. How do you handle it?
AdvancedWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong answers listen, acknowledge the impact, coordinate a fix, and follow up, staying calm. Getting defensive or over-promising are red flags.
Upselling & Expansion
1 questionHow do you spot expansion opportunities without being pushy?
IntermediateWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for expansion that solves a real customer need and follows delivered value, not quota-driven pressure. Pushing upsells on unhappy customers is a red flag.
Customer Health Scoring
1 questionHow do you use customer health scoring to prioritise your accounts?
IntermediateWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong candidates combine usage, engagement, and sentiment signals to triage risk and focus effort. Treating all accounts the same is a red flag.
QBR Presentations
1 questionHow do you run a QBR that the customer actually finds valuable?
IntermediateWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for showing value delivered, tying to their goals, and aligning on the road ahead, not just a usage dump. A generic slide review is a red flag.
Communication
1 questionHow do you advocate for a customer internally when their needs conflict with the roadmap?
AdvancedWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong answers translate customer needs into business impact for product and set honest expectations. Overpromising features to the customer is a red flag.
Organization
1 questionHow do you juggle many accounts without letting some slip through the cracks?
BasicWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for segmentation, a cadence, and using the CRM to stay on top of touchpoints. Being purely reactive is a red flag.
Proactivity
1 questionHow do you stay ahead of customer needs rather than just responding to tickets?
IntermediateWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong candidates monitor signals and reach out with value proactively. A purely reactive, support-desk mindset is a red flag for a CSM.
Problem Solving
1 questionHow do you handle a customer asking for something the product simply cannot do?
IntermediateWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for honesty, finding a workaround or alternative, and feeding it to product, without misleading. Pretending it is possible is a red flag.
Salesforce
1 questionHow do you use Salesforce (or your CRM) to manage account health and next steps?
BasicWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong candidates keep account data, health, and tasks current to drive proactive outreach. Treating the CRM as optional admin is a red flag.
Behavioural & role-general
2 questionsTell me about a churn you prevented or an account you turned around.
BasicWhat the interviewer is looking for: Strong answers show early detection, a concrete plan, and a measurable outcome. Vague stories with no result are a red flag.
How do you define and measure success in a CSM role?
BasicWhat the interviewer is looking for: Look for retention, expansion, and customer outcomes, not just activity. Measuring success purely by tasks done is a red flag.
